What is BRDL?

BRDL is a version of Wordle for bird lovers in which only bird names can be used to solve the puzzle each day. It's not like Wordle in that the mystery word doesn't necessarily have to be five letters long. It was made by Alex Tomilson, who is a well-known graphic designer. It's a new challenge for Wordle fans. This game's banding codes can be challenging.

How to play BRDL

In this game, players have to guess the four-letter banding codes that scientists use to shorten the names of species (as in GREG for great egret and MODO for mourning dove).

What’s a bird code?

Banding codes in North America can have either four or six letters. Bird codes and banding codes are each made up of four letters. The most important thing to remember about BRDL is that the codes come from the official Bird Banding Laboratory and follow a specific set of rules, which are explained below.

  • When there is only one word in the name, the code is just the first four letters.

BOBOLINK: BOBO

OSPREY: OSPR

GYRFALCON: GYRF

  • When a bird's name consists of two words, the first two letters of each word are used in the code.

MOURNING DOVE: MODO

GREAT EGRET: GREG

COMMON NIGHTHAWK: CONI

  • When there are three words, it gets a little harder. The code in this case is made up of the first letter of each of the first two words, as well as the first two letters of the third.

GREAT BLUE HERON: GBHE

CLAY-COLORED SPARROW: CCSP

  • If, as in the example below, a three-word name ends in a hyphen, the first two letters of the first name and the first letter of each of the second names should be used instead.

FLORIDA SCRUB-JAY: FLSJ

  • Lastly, if the name is made up of four words, the code is the first letter of each word, even if there is a hyphen between them.

EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL: EWPW

GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCH: GCRF

WEDGE-RUMPED STORM-PETREL: WRSP

It's a simple game to play if you enjoy word puzzles and quizzes online. The game is a new and larger version of the popular NBA word game, Poeltl. You can play it online using the hints and guesses that are given. Birdle is a new word game that will make you think and work harder. Got it all? Okay, good. Happy BRDLing!
